Tinker AFB is a multi-mission/multi-faceted base which combines the best characteristics of an air base all in one central geographic location within the United States. The base serves Air Force, Navy, and Department of Defense organizations. Tinker is home to the Oklahoma City Air Logistics Center and a number of associate organizations, including the Navy E-6 Strategic Communications Wing ONE, the 552 Air Control Wing, the 507th Air Refueling Wing, the 38th Engineering Installation Wing, the 3rd Combat Communications Group, the Defense Information Systems Agency, the Defense Accounting Office, the Materiel Systems Group, the Defense Printing Service Detachment Office and the Defense Logistics Agency.

The population of Tinker AFB is approximately 30,000, making it comparable to a city. The base has its own police, fire department, hospital, churches, day care center and school, airport, recreational parks, restaurants, shops, bowling alley, golf course, movie theater, hotel, civil engineering, housing development, industrial areas, waste disposal plant and library.

Tinker is a big business with a "mega facility" industrial complex which commands state of the art capability. The versatile, flexible facilities can be reconfigured for any combination of aircraft, engines and commodities. The base encompasses approximately 5,000 acres and conducts daily operations in 760 buildings. The buildings, facilities and land were acquired at a cost of $582 and have an estimated replacement value of $3.2 billion. The indoor maintenance area covers 133 acres while the covered warehouse space comprises 89 acres.
