Since it's founding in 1942, Midwest City has been a vibrant, growing community. We are a part
of the Oklahoma City Metropolitan Area, yet we retain our hometown, friendly atmosphere while
providing goods and services to nearly one-third of the 650,000 residents of Oklahoma County.
The citizens of Midwest City have eagerly and generously provided the energy and resources to
make this City a better community in which to live and work.
Our People Make The Difference
The Founder and Father of Midwest City, W.P. 'Bill' Atkinson, still resides here. He and his
family remain actively involved in the development and economic health of the community.
Affectionately known as "Mr. A", he has provided for the continuation of the cultural and historic
life of Midwest City by developing a living history museum in his home. He has generously
offered his home, and part of the surrounding acreage, which includes a beautiful arboretum, to
eventually become part of the City's park system.
One of the most active but little known organizations in the community is the Tree Board.
Instrumental in beautifying the right-of-way along major arterials, their efforts have led to Midwest
City being designated "Tree City, USA," since 1982.
Other organizations have also done their part to improve the quality of life with their efforts in
providing for our parks. Midwest City has 28 public parks, the largest being Joe B. Barnes
Regional Park, which is 400 acres and includes the most popular public golf course in the metro
area. Kiwanis, Rotary, Optimist, Lions, Ambucs and many other civic, service, business,
cultural, military, religious and volunteer groups have provided not only for our parks, but also our
college, schools, sports, public events and festivals.
The Economic Development Commission and the Chamber of Commerce, in conjunction with
civic leaders, retail and business associations are instrumental in the economic health of the
City. The City is led by a Mayor/Council/City Manager Government, primarily made up of forward
thinking professionals in the community who are business friendly and continuously look for
ways to encourage commercial and residential development.
Today, Midwest City is growing, the business community is stable, and because of the focus on
the large market segment of the visitor industry, there is substantial growth in the hospitality and
entertainment sector. There is considerable new commercial development currently under
construction with many additional plans being considered for the near future. There are numerous
nationally based companies with offices here and many have plans for expansion.
We enjoy a high quality workforce produced by an excellent common, vocational/technical and
higher education system. The Mid-Del School District takes pride in developing students both
academically and athletically.
MIDWEST CITY, OKLAHOMA - a community that families and businesses are proud to call
home.
